Perfect!

We were not sure whether to stay here because of the lack of reviews. We were pleasantly surprised, could not believe how nice it was for the price. Its newly opened, clean, relaxing and we had the best nights sleep we have had for a long time. It is a short walk into the town, there is a beautiful clean river 2 minutes walk away which is amazing to cool off in. The location is stunning opposite the jungle and the garden area is really amazing to relax, drink and eat in. What makes the place even more special is all the staff who are so welcoming and friendly. Sarah and Agus are amazing hosts, the chefs are so smiley and cook you amazing food, try the Redang!!! We also got some live indonesian music, games and jungle magic tricks! And also our favourite staff member, Cheeky! He is a really friendly puppy. Thank you for having us Cheeky Monkeys! We hope to see you again!

Beautiful & peaceful

If I could give Cheeky Monkeys more than 5 stars I would! It was such a clean, comfortable, friendly guesthouse in a peaceful and beautiful location next to the river just a sort walk from the main town. We loved our stay because Sarah & Agus are so welcoming, we definitely could have stayed for longer just relaxing in their beautiful garden. Ellie is a fantastic Chef, the delicious food was cooked fresh for us any time we asked. I really enjoyed meeting the local children that Sarah teaches twice a week, so lovely to be involved in their class. I highly recommend staying at Cheeky Monkeys!

Don’t hesitate to stay at this wonderful place!

We really loved our stay at cheeky monkeys! Everyone was so friendly and made us feel really welcome especially the owners Sarah and her husband Augus. The property is just outside of town which means it is lovely, quiet and tranquil (but easy to walk into town if you want to) you can reach the bat cave by foot and there is a beautiful river within a 5 minute walk that you can swim in (usually all to yourself) The rooms are within beautiful manicured gardens that allows you to feel relaxed. The room we had was nice and clean and the fan worked really well. It is cool at night in Bukit Lawang so not necessary for ac. The bed was nice and comfy! The food was really good and beers can be provided 🙂 We booked our orangutan jungle trekking through cheeky monkeys and the guide we had was exceptional! He was so friendly and made our trip really memorable. He knew so much about the jungle and was able to take us on the best routes to spot as many animals as possible. Don’t hesitate to stay here, it is an absolute gem!

Great Stay

The place just opened and it is super nice. The owners, an English woman and an Indonesian man who are married, are very welcoming and friendly. We received a welcome drink and organized a trekking with them to the jungle. It was amazing! The view from the hotel is beautiful and the food is absolutely delicious. Try the gadogado!! Rooms are clean and the staff will make sure you receive all you desire.

Exceptional

We did an amazing tour with guide Andre. We will never forget this tour! We came in close contact with many wild orangutans. Andre told us many things about the jungle, the animals and the plants. Andre knows so much about the jungle and the Indonesian way of life. The camping and the food was also amazing. We would definitely do the tour again. Ask for guide Andre if you want to do the tour and you will never regret it!

Brilliant stay in Bukit Lawang

Everything – fantastic location with a beautiful view. Very well maintained garden that is a pleasure to sit in. Staff are amazing, incredibly friendly and ready to help with anything. They didn’t have a room available when we got back from trekking but helped us to find another one next door. Also booked the shared taxi to our next destination. On the last night there was a lovely music session with guitar and drums that was a lot of fun. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.

Everything here is so beautiful. Our host Sarah and Agus and all other members we met there are all very welcoming and friendly. We loved the our jungle trip and enjoyed the nights with music and magic.

Really chilled place

I really enjoyed my staying here! We spent a night before the trek and one night after the trek. The staff and the owners are really friendly relaxed and helpful. The food is very good and authentic. Thank you for the nice time and see you soon!!

Such a lovely place & awesome people!

We had such a lovely time in Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys ! The personal was so very nice, helpful and friendly, our room was very very cute, the place is absolutely amazing (beautiful, peaceful, just awesome). And we did the 2 days trek with André (one of their guide)and it was an amazing experience. We saw orang-outans, pig tailed macaques, thomas leaf monkeys, we ate like kings (fruits were to die for, and the lunches and dinner were also great), we got to see amazing landscapes…. Little bonus for our guide Andre who is a jungle lover, very respectful of the animals and the nature, the night at the camp was so funny we played cards and he would made magic tricks, we had a great laugh. If we could, we would definitely come back! Thank you to the personal, and may we meet again!

Great riverside homestay

We loved the location a little away from the village and with jungle and river views. Sarah and Agus are very welcoming so you soon feel at home. The room was clean and nicely decorated. Be aware that there is no hot water shower like most places in Bukit Lawang but we did not really miss it. We had the luxury room that was just like the pics and had its own terrace which gave us a lot of privacy and a great view. Sarah and Agus arranged a fair priced pickup and drop off to Medan and a lovely and interesting village tour by becak. They also arranged a two day one night jungletour with the very experienced guides you see on the pics. The guides made our son feel at home in the jungle with magic tricks and night fishing and showed us a lot of different animals next to the Orangutans. They were very knowledgeable and adjusted the route to our needs. We became ill with a virus after the jungle tour and Sarah and Agus helped us a lot. So thanks again for everything.

What a fantastic stay! If you are looking for an accommodation in Bukit Lawang with a little more luxury (nice and spacious room, air conditioning and a hot shower), don't hesitate and book your stay at the Cheeky Monkey's Villa. The family who run it and the staff are so helpful and hospitable. You can also enjoy a delicious meal at the accommodation itself, which we did every evening. Even when I wasn't feeling well, the family was very caring!

The jungle trekking organized by Cheeky Monkey's was so special and well taken care of. The guides were very skilled, with great respect for nature and animals. We saw seven different Orangutans and many other monkeys this day, something we will never forget for the rest of our lives 🙂 In addition to the jungle trekking, they also organize many other fun activities. Definitely do it!

What a beautiful humble abode. My stay here was incredible. The house has a beautiful garden and is nestled next to the river, beside the jungle and only a short walk into the town, Bukit Lawang. The family are so welcoming, and the team there are so helpful, caring and knowledgeable. The food is also amazing. You can’t go wrong staying here if you’re looking to do jungle trekking, learn more about our Indonesian culture or relax at the house.

Had the best time at Cheeky Monkeys!
Sarah and Agus really looked after me while I stayed at Cheeky Monkeys for a few days.

The food was amazing and the jungle trekking was out of this world!

Highly recommended if you are visiting Sumatra.🐵

Very nice room, comfortable bed, great property. The whole staff is super nice and helpful, we had great conversations with Sarah, Adi and an exciting game of billiards with little Aurel. Ellie's food is very tasty and special. The Sunrise Jungle Trekking with our wonderful guides Waka and Saurel was a great adventure, we saw all 4 monkey species and orangutans. The river rafting back was also a highlight!
On the last evening we all played music together.
Tondi picked us up from Medan and brought us back again, it was a very pleasant ride.
We wish we had stayed longer. We'll come back sometime! 😊

I booked the accommodation for a few days and ended up staying for two weeks. I liked it so much because the staff and the owners were very nice and also spent time with me, which I really appreciated as a solo traveler. The accommodation is a little away from the center but is beautifully situated in the nature. There is also a river nearby where you can cool off. I can highly recommend Cheeky Monkeys.

I stayed with Cheeky Monkeys for 5 nights (2 of those in the jungle on a 3D2N trekking tour) and I had the best time!

The location is beautiful with a river nearby for swimming and a short walk along the canal into the centre of Bukit Lawang. Plenty of shops, warungs and laundry nearby or the food cooked onsite is great too!

Special shoutout to the staff who went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our time, even though there was a family emergency for them during my stay. Rian and Sarol were the best guides, their enthusiasm and energy was super and a decent level of english speaking which meant we could talk a lot more about the animals, the jungle and also joke around and have fun ☺️

I will be recommending all my friends to come here, and maybe one day be back for a longer trekking experience 😆

My husband and I had stayed in Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys in June 2024. The property is neat and clean and overlooks the jungle. There is a river flowing by just in front of the property. Sarah, Agus and other stuffs made us feel at home away from home. We opted for 1 day jungle trek to Gunung Leuser National Park and bat caving and barbeque by Landak river on the next day. Our guide Jerry and porter Sahrul were friendly and skilled. We were able to see orangutans at their natural habitat. We walked through Rubber plantations on the way to Gunung Leuser National Park. Inside the park, we experienced the rich biodiversity of local flora and fauna. The lunch provided was very good too. These people care for the jungle a lot. Bat caving was quite fun too. Barbeque by the Landak river was an wonderful experience. The water was very refreshing. Jerry and Sahrul made the barbeque while we relaxed by the river. Swimming in the river is very refreshing. Foods at the property were delicious too. We especially enjoyed the gado gado salad and Rendang curry. Sarah arranged our visit to Berastagi and Sipiso piso waterfall and Batak culture tour as well. Volcano sunrise trek was something I experienced for the first time. Our guide for the volcano trek was very experienced and knowledgeable. And last but not the least I would like to mention our driver Tondi who was always on time and made our tour seamless. I would highly recommend Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys.
