Each of the treks has already been explored, mapped and created by the King of the Jungle. ‘Jungling’ is a transformational experience; there is always a chance that guests will encounter the wild and partially-cultivated orangutans and oodles of rare birds and other wildlife.

Please note: The Guiding Association (HPI) determines and regulates the prices and activities for Jungle Trekking in the national park here in North Sumatra. Unfortunately this means all prices are non negotiable.

River tubing is exceptionally fun and sometimes exhilarating. Float down the Bohorok River in large inflated rubber tubes and see the rainforest and beautiful scenery; drift past pretty villages, wave at children swimming and bathing in the water; there is always plenty of wildlife to see too. Tubing can be added on to each of the trekking experiences for a nominal fee.

A fascinating, 500-metre cave system that is home to thousands of bats. With the beam of light from a torch, guests meander through pathways of otherworldly geological formations. Traverse through narrow trails and peer through open sections of cave roof to see blue skies, the jungle canopy and cheeky monkeys.

The trek continues to Landak River which translates into ‘Hedgehog River’.  The crystal clear waters of the river are perfect for swimming and being at one with nature. Some of the tallest trees in the world line this peaceful river, the Tuakang tree can grow up to 70 metres. Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys can provide a delicious in the shadows of these magnificent trees.

THE VILLAGE PEOPLE

An exciting and interactive adventure with local villagers. Guests are introduced to various farming techniques, including, the production of latex from rubber trees, how tofu and brown sugar are manufactured; and a visit to a cacao plantation. Guests will be invited to explore traditional Indonesian farming technologies.

Lunch is at a traditional restaurant called a warung, which serves local curries, vegetables and rice. Cutlery is not provided; guests eat with their right hand!, just like the locals: Cheeky Monkeys calls this home, and they hope that guests immerse themselves into the indigenous culture and enjoy the friendly local people.

Day 1: Immerse yourself in the lush plantations and majestic mountains of Berastagi!

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as you travel through the picturesque plantations and stunning mountain landscapes of the Karonese heartlands. Your destination is the charming highland town of Berastagi, where you’ll check into your choice of hotel and prepare for the journey ahead!

Day 2: Trek to the summit of an active volcano, explore traditional villages and witness the raw power of Indonesia’s tallest waterfall!

Experience the beauty of the Karonese heartlands as you set off on a sunrise trek to the summit of mount Sibayak, an active volcano with breath-taking views. Afterwards we will enjoy a dip in the hot springs and then onto explore traditional villages and witness the fascinating culture of the Batak tribes. Stop at the Berastagi traditional fruit market for a taste of the region’s rich produce before visiting the awe-inspiring Sepiso-Piso waterfall on the way to Lake Toba. We will take a scenic boat ride to the island of Samosir, where you’ll watch the sun set over the beautiful lake after checking into a hotel room of your choice.

Day 3: Immerse yourself in Bataknese culture and history.

Discover the rich history and cultural traditions of the Batak people as you visit the village of Simanindo to witness their ceremonial dances. Then, travel to the community of Ambarita, where you’ll see the famous stone chair of king Siallagan, an ancient symbol of Batak royalty. Surrounding
the stone chair are 800-year-old traditional bataknese houses, providing a glimpse into the area’s fascinating history. Afterward, enjoy a scenic route back to your hotel, taking in the panoramic views of the Samosir foothills.

Day 4: Relax and Unwind on the Shores of Lake Toba

Take a break from your adventure and spend the day relaxing on the shores of Lake Toba. Soak up the stunning views, indulge in some delicious local cuisine, and reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days.

It is essential that guests are comfortable and remain hydrated throughout the trek; Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys recommend guests bring:

JUNGLE RULES

The essential jungle rule is that guests follow the Sumatra Cheeky Monkey guides’ instructions. The guides have many years of experience in the jungle and with the wild animals that live there. Guests are asked to respect the animals and the guides so that each member of the group remains safe and enjoy this magical experience.

  • The maximum group size permitted is seven people
  • A maximum of ten minutes viewing time is allowed with orangutans
  • A guest who is sick is not allowed to trek
  • Guests are to maintain a ten-metre gap between orangutans (it is not a kitten!)
  • Do not talk to, call, or tease orangutans (this also applies to children vying for attention)
  • Stay as quiet and still as possible
  • Do not feed or give water to any animal
  • Do not use flash photography or try and take selfies
  • Do not litter
  • Smoking is not permitted
  • Do not take anything from the jungle
  • If an orangutan comes close, remain calm and do not touch them

It is against Indonesian Law to harm any wildlife

When guests return to base, they can take advantage of a delightful massage to ease away any trekking-tensions, or just for a special pamper.
