Each of the treks has already been explored, mapped and created by the King of the Jungle. ‘Jungling’ is a transformational experience; there is always a chance that guests will encounter the wild and partially-cultivated orangutans and oodles of rare birds and other wildlife.

Please note: The Guiding Association (HPI) determines and regulates the prices and activities for Jungle Trekking in the national park here in North Sumatra. Unfortunately this means all prices are non negotiable.

The Spirit of Sunrise is a unique trek that allows guests to experience the awakening of the jungle. An early rise and a peaceful amble take guests to the edge of the Leuser National Park and its magnificent jungle. The Cheeky’s guides serve a hearty breakfast as the sun dramatically rises above the mountains and the treetops. A cacophony of jungle sounds and the song of the gibbon welcomes a brand new day. After breakfast, the trek takes guests deeper into the jungle in pursuit of spotting orangutans, monkeys, gibbons, hornbills and other colourful jungle birds and snakes. The incredible flora and fauna cocoon guests as they meander through narrow pathways. It’s highly unlikely that other junglers will be spotted at this early hour

Back at basecamp, therapists await guests with an array of soothing essential oils for a blissful sunset massage. A perfect way to relax aching muscles and to end the day before a delicious garden-to-table dinner.

This trek is perfect for those junglers wishing to spend as much time surrounded by nature as possible and allows them to witness wildlife awaken from a nights slumber and be ahead of other trekkers. The trek covers two days of ground in one day. A gentle tubing ride back to base gives tired junglers a chance to rest before enjoying a heady cocktail or a massage after an extraordinary day.

THE ULTIMATE KINGDOM

The Ultimate Kingdom trek is the unparalleled choice for adventurously buff ‘junglers’. Four or five days are spent exploring and traversing challenging terrains that take guests over the Bohorok and Jambur Batu rivers, past cooling waterfalls, through dense jungle and up and down undulating hills. The biodiversity of nature on this trek is peerless; Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys guides will share essential information on the animals and plants as guests walk through these seemingly untouched lands.

The Ultimate Kingdom crisscrosses through the deepest jungle and affords guests the opportunity of sighting wild Sumatran orangutans, Sumatran elephants, Sumatran monitor lizards, tortoises and brightly coloured river butterflies.

The Ultimate Kingdom five day trek offers the opportunity of exploring deep into even denser and more challenging jungle giving the brave ‘jungler’ more chances of seeing rare wildlife, elephants and perhaps tigers and fascinating paw prints. This trek will hone tracking skills.

Following days of intense climbing; the final day proffers a fun trip back to base. The ‘junglers-taxi’ lazily transports guests in their river tubes. Weary limbs will feel rested as the jungle speeds past. A cocktail full of punch awaits.

THE KINGS CROWN

An authentic ‘jungling’ experience for those eco-travellers that are physically fit and have good stamina. This three-day adventure takes guests into the depths of the jungle to explore the sights, sounds and smells of the tropical forests. Learn tracking skills with the Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys guides and identify footprints, signs of animal inhabitation, the sounds of nature, and how to recognise individual plants.

The Kings Crown’ trek is exhilarating and offers the best chance of seeing orangutans, gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys, pigtail macaques, flying squirrels, Sumatran peacocks and hornbills. Explorers will be on the move for three days and camp overnight at two different sites.

THE JOURNEY OF A PRIMATE

The most popular of the Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys treks: guests can walk along the same path as some of the worlds rarest primates. This trek is designed for moderately active ‘junglers’ and will explore the forests, flora and fauna whilst being on high alert for monkeys, macaques and orangutans. There are opportunities for swimming at the foot of cooling waterfalls, tracking footprints and identifying local plants.

FOOTPRINTS AND PAWPRINTS

A beautiful, one-day trek for guests that don’t have the time or inclination to experience expeditions into the deep jungle, or have super-power fitness levels. A peaceful amble takes guests on a journey of discovery into the Gunung Leuser National Park where there is a good chance of discovering orangutans, long-tail macaques, Thomas leaf monkeys, monitor lizards, hornbills and Great Argus pheasants. The guides will encourage ‘breathers’ so that guests can relax at waterfalls and streams so they can listen in awe, to the song of the jungle.

A CHEEKY RAMBLE

Cheeky’s favourite trek is a half-day ramble through Gunung Leuser National Park. This walk is recommended for guests with limited fitness levels or those with children that would like to experience a taster-trek that is not too taxing. Guests experience the wonderment of nature, watch semi-wild orangutans, discover hidden ‘animal-homes’, learn a little about tracking and see a smorgasbord of plants, animals and other wildlife.

THE FEARLESS JUNGLER

Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys’ guides are always available for a challenge. Please contact the King of the Jungle with your wish list; he will be able to create a courageous journey of a lifetime. RIVER TUBING

River tubing is exceptionally fun and sometimes exhilarating. Float down the Bohorok River in large inflated rubber tubes and see the rainforest and beautiful scenery; drift past pretty villages, wave at children swimming and bathing in the water; there is always plenty of wildlife to see too. Tubing can be added on to each of the trekking experiences for a nominal fee.

LANDAK RIVER BARBEQUE AND BAT CAVE

Four – five hours

Low intensity

A fascinating, 500-metre cave system that is home to thousands of bats. With the beam of light from a torch, guests meander through pathways of otherworldly geological formations. Traverse through narrow trails and peer through open sections of cave roof to see blue skies, the jungle canopy and cheeky monkeys.

The trek continues to Landak River which translates into ‘Hedgehog River’. The crystal clear waters of the river are perfect for swimming and being at one with nature. Some of the tallest trees in the world line this peaceful river, the Tuakang tree can grow up to 70 metres. Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys can provide a delicious in the shadows of these magnificent trees.

THE VILLAGE PEOPLE

Four hours

An exciting and interactive adventure with local villagers. Guests are introduced to various farming techniques, including, the production of latex from rubber trees, how tofu and brown sugar are manufactured; and a visit to a cacao plantation. Guests will be invited to explore traditional Indonesian farming technologies.

Lunch is at a traditional restaurant called a warung, which serves local curries, vegetables and rice. Cutlery is not provided; guests eat with their right hand!, just like the locals: Cheeky Monkeys calls this home, and they hope that guests immerse themselves into the indigenous culture and enjoy the friendly local people.

Day 1: Immerse yourself in the lush plantations and majestic mountains of Berastagi!

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as you travel through the picturesque plantations and stunning mountain landscapes of the Karonese heartlands. Your destination is the charming highland town of Berastagi, where you’ll check into your choice of hotel and prepare for the journey ahead!

Day 2: Trek to the summit of an active volcano, explore traditional villages and witness the raw power of Indonesia’s tallest waterfall!

Experience the beauty of the Karonese heartlands as you set off on a sunrise trek to the summit of mount Sibayak, an active volcano with breath-taking views. Afterwards we will enjoy a dip in the hot springs and then onto explore traditional villages and witness the fascinating culture of the Batak tribes. Stop at the Berastagi traditional fruit market for a taste of the region’s rich produce before visiting the awe-inspiring Sepiso-Piso waterfall on the way to Lake Toba. We will take a scenic boat ride to the island of Samosir, where you’ll watch the sun set over the beautiful lake after checking into a hotel room of your choice.

Day 3: Immerse yourself in Bataknese culture and history.

Discover the rich history and cultural traditions of the Batak people as you visit the village of Simanindo to witness their ceremonial dances. Then, travel to the community of Ambarita, where you’ll see the famous stone chair of king Siallagan, an ancient symbol of Batak royalty. Surrounding
the stone chair are 800-year-old traditional bataknese houses, providing a glimpse into the area’s fascinating history. Afterward, enjoy a scenic route back to your hotel, taking in the panoramic views of the Samosir foothills.

Day 4: Relax and Unwind on the Shores of Lake Toba

Take a break from your adventure and spend the day relaxing on the shores of Lake Toba. Soak up the stunning views, indulge in some delicious local cuisine, and reflect on the incredible experiences of the past few days.

Day 5: Departure

After a refreshing breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to the beautiful island of Samosir and head back to the airport or to your next adventure!

It is essential that guests are comfortable and remain hydrated throughout the trek; Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys recommend guests bring:

JUNGLE RULES

The essential jungle rule is that guests follow the Sumatra Cheeky Monkey guides’ instructions. The guides have many years of experience in the jungle and with the wild animals that live there. Guests are asked to respect the animals and the guides so that each member of the group remains safe and enjoy this magical experience.

The maximum group size permitted is seven people
A maximum of ten minutes viewing time is allowed with orangutans
A guest who is sick is not allowed to trek
Guests are to maintain a ten-metre gap between orangutans (it is not a kitten!)
Do not talk to, call, or tease orangutans (this also applies to children vying for attention)
Stay as quiet and still as possible
Do not feed or give water to any animal
Do not use flash photography or try and take selfies
Do not litter
Smoking is not permitted
Do not take anything from the jungle
If an orangutan comes close, remain calm and do not touch them

It is against Indonesian Law to harm any wildlife

When guests return to base, they can take advantage of a delightful massage to ease away any trekking-tensions, or just for a special pamper.
