ECOLOGICALLY FRIENDLY EXPERIENCES IN THE GLORIOUS JUNGLE SETTING OF SUMATRA

About Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys

Sumatran Orangutans are facing critical displacement and destruction in their natural habitats.

Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys is a family-owned business that provides a wide range of ethical tours in Bukit Lawang, located on the edge of the magnificent Gunung Leuser National Park in North Sumatra.

We collaborate with local partners, villagers and ethical guides to offer ecological tours enabling visitors to observe orangutan families in their jungle home and explore other extraordinary wildlife, flora and fauna.

Sumatra is the largest island in Indonesia and the sixth-largest in the world. The Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca envelop this elongated island. Sumatra is diverse and boasts the Bukit Barisan mountains, wild and open plains, lowlands peppered with swamps, lush mangrove forests and multifaceted river systems. Dense tropical rain forests once dominated the landscape, but deforestation has resulted in orangutan inhabited rain forests being only in Sumatra and Borneo.

Sumatra Cheeky Monkeys tours traverse the biodiverse landscape of Gunung Leuser National Park. The park houses over 750 species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds, not to mention exciting, otherworldly collections of flora: which includes the worlds largest and tallest flowers ‘Rafflesia Arnoldi and Amorphophallus Titanum’. There is documentation of scientific identification of over ten thousand varieties of plants in this area.

Many animal species in this outstanding region are critically endangered and include Sumatran rhinoceros, Sumatran elephant, Sumatran tiger and the Sumatran orangutan. Diversity remains within the rainforest, but it needs care and respect to flourish. Guests may also encounter cartloads or tribes of primates including Thomas Leaf monkeys, macaques and gibbons.

The residents of Bukit Lawang offer generous hospitality. Sumatra Cheeky Monkey’s guides have tailor-made tours introducing guests to the vibrant Indonesian culture of local villagers. Guests can watch and take part in every-day life such as schooling, markets and local handicrafts, weddings, and even football!

Agus

The Indonesian King of the Jungle and owner

Cheeky says …

“Agus is my daddy. He is the King of the Jungle and owner (he thinks he owns me, but as I said, I am a free spirit!). Daddy is a funny one, and although he was born in Bukit Lawang; he likes Marmite. I think that mommy introduced it to him. I don’t like it; it makes me pull a face like I’m sucking lemons. Daddy is very brave, and he has travelled to many of the countries in Asia, he said he’s even seen camels in the deserts of the Middle East. I don’t know what they are, but they spit at people. I think that’s quite rude.

Daddy is very kind; he likes everyone, but best of all, he loves mommy and me the most. He bathes me every day so that my coat shines and I smell nice. He is passionate about Indonesia and likes to support all of the people that live close to us. He loves to play magic tricks, card games and puzzles with the children that come and visit.

Our house is always full of song, laughter and music. Daddy loves to sing and he taught himself to play the guitar and bongo drums. He has a great singing voice especially when he sings his favourite Indonesian songs. Mommy laughs at him when he tries to be a rap-star.

Daddy is the best person to go trekking with; he is compassionate and loves all animals, reptiles, birds and insects, though he’s not too keen on slithery snakes. He even likes upsidedown geckos. He has the BEST smile in the world and loves to entertain people, whether it’s making them laugh-inducing cocktails or cooking super-spicy curries. He uses many ingredients that he has grown in the garden. He makes mommy and me very happy.”

Sarah

English Queen of the Jungle: the wife of the King

Cheeky says …

“Sarah is the English Queen of the Jungle, owner, the wife of the King and my mommy. She is half English and half Egyptian, I’m not sure which half belongs where it confuses me a bit. I think I saw a film once where there were lots of mummies who lived in the pyramids.

Like daddy; mommy loves to travel. She’s visited 35 countries and lived in four. I’m glad that she came to Indonesia and met daddy and me. Over three years ago, she fell in love with daddy, North Sumatra and its people, the diversity and the way of life. She sounds funny when she tries to speak Bahasa Indonesia. We live a simple and humble life in Sumatra and enjoy all nationalities, cultures and religions; even dotty ones like me. We foster lots of love in our home and with our guests.

Mommy is busy like me, she is crazy about food and runs a food and beverage company where she like lots of lettuce and focuses on health, sustainability and promoting farm-to-fork products. She works very hard to help preserve our beautiful land, and from her heart she wants to support local people to be empowered and help them with their sums. Mommy believes that through knowledge we can all make better decisions for our lives and future. She teaches local children English each week.

Mommy’s favourite things are free-roaming chickens, watching five people on a scooter, the herds of animals that wander through our gardens each day, and daddy and me. She invented the word ‘jungle-nomics’ which means economics in the jungle; she and daddy talk about it a LOT. Neither of them likes to watch the TV but they love to watch movies about dogs. She works hard, so sometimes she has to do as the locals do best – take things slow.”

Cheeky

Spirit of the Jungle, the boss and head of social media

Cheeky

“Wag, wag, that means hi in Cheeky language!

As you will have gathered, I am the Spirit of the Jungle, the boss and head of social media, which means I’m top dog. I was born an only child, and I use that to my advantage every day.

I was only six weeks old when I came to live with Agus (daddy) and Sarah (mommy). They are great! They kept calling me a cheeky boy, and I think that the name has stuck and suits me perfectly. I believe in hooman language it means the ‘fairest of them all’. I’m very rare and am a mix of border collie and dalmation, I’m black and white with some random dots! I’m very handsome.

I’m a bit of a lover boy and adore all animals, though cats seem to think they are superior, so I like to try and take them down a peg or two and bark at them. I’m too scared of them to chase them, though. Evil eyes! I have a cow girlfriend and a sheep girlfriend. I like kissing their wet noses; it tickles! Every morning and evening, there are herds of cows, buffalo and sheep that walk through the garden and along the river, I really like to play with them: they are fun.

We have lots, and lots of exciting guests come and stay with us, I like to show them places that mommy and daddy don’t know. I have a secret walk to the river where the guests can go and have a refreshing swim. I try and wait for them, but sometimes my friends call me, and I forget to go back and find them. They all seem to be quite intelligent and make their way back home.

One of my favourite things is to go on outings with mommy and daddy. I love to sit in the footwell of their moped and feel the wind flap my ears; sometimes when they go fast, my lips flutter in the breeze. Another of my bestest things is cuddles. I forget that I have grown up into a big boy and still try and curl up on mommy’s lap. She gets squashed, but I think she secretly loves the attention. I have a funny (for me) habit in the morning: I paw and kiss mommy and daddy’s faces, and it wakes them up so that I can have my eggs for breakfast. I have my own pillow and blanket on my bed.

I love everything in the world other than geckos. They don’t have eyelids, and they can walk upsidedown on the ceiling. So I try and spook them by staring at them. Sometimes for hours.”

The Orange Clan

The
Orangutans

Cheeky says …

“These fluffy orange animals are my best friends. Although they have 97% of the same DNA that hoomans have, they are quite different. They live in nests, and they definitely don’t like Marmite! They love ‘hanging around’ in the jungle and are really quite shy. It can be tiring going to visit them, as they can live a long way away. Please look after my friends; they are critically endangered because of deforestation. Both mommy and daddy say that there might not be any left soon and this makes us all sad.”
