Designed for travellers short on time but eager for a deeper rainforest experience, this extended 10-hour ethical jungle trek in Bukit Lawang offers more ground covered than a standard day trek, with excellent opportunities to encounter wild orangutans, discover rich plant life and witness the beauty of the forest in the soft morning light — returning to your accommodation by around 3 pm.

Trek Itinerary
Your guide will meet you at your accommodation at 5:00 a.m. for a short safety briefing before setting off on your Sunrise Trek. The walk begins along the river toward the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, where you’ll arrive at a quiet viewpoint just as the sun rises over the treetops and the Bohorok River valley. Enjoy breakfast surrounded by golden light and the sounds of the jungle waking — gibbons calling, birds singing, and the soft rustle of leaves in the morning breeze.
After sunrise, continue your journey deeper into the rainforest, following trails that wind through thick vegetation, steep hills, and rubber plantations. With luck, you will likely spot Sumatran orangutans swinging through the trees, as well as Thomas leaf monkeys, macaques, hornbills, or even a shy monitor lizard. Your guide will share stories about the forest and point out plants used for food, medicine, and survival.
Around midday, stop for lunch in the shade of the trees, taking time to rest and soak in the magic of the jungle. In the afternoon, begin your return journey through new terrain before reaching the river. End your adventure with a refreshing and fun tubing ride downstream, floating back to Bukit Lawang — a relaxing way to finish your full day of exploring the rainforest.
